The city of Lviv, which is rightly considered to be the unofficial capital of western Ukraine, was founded in the XIII century by Prince of Gilitsko-Volyn principality Daniel Romanovich. Throughout its history Lviv was the official capital of five state formations existed in the territory western Ukraine. According to the basic version of the origin of the name of Lviv, the city was named after the son of Prince Daniel Galitsky - Lev. The city is an important economic center of Ukraine. The economy of Lviv includes well developed food industry, metallurgy and mechanical engineering, light industry, chemical and petrochemical industries. Lviv Enterprises have a monopoly position in the Ukrainian light bulbs and forklifts producing market. Lviv is one of the largest scientific centers of Ukraine, there are more then 59 higher education institutions operate in Lviv. The cultural sector includes 10 theaters (the oldest one was established in 1795), the Philharmonic and the House of Organ Music. Architecture of Lviv's historic center listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
